I woke up this morning with the sun streaming in my window reviving my inner 70s bombshell wannabe (hello Brigitte Bardot) and a little of Carmen Sandiego’s catch-me-if-you-can mystery while trying to hide under the covers for some extra sleep. What better way to satisfy my style icon craving than with a floppy hat? The hat, might I add, is the ULTIMATE understated, attention grabbing accessory. Everyone always notices the girl in the hat before anyone else in the room. A Lovely Bird floppy hat is an excellent choice for a look similar to mine or a Civil Clothing snapback for those urban glamazon days.
Back to my icon cravings.
My cravings stem not only from the signature styles of the icons but their finesse to pull off their unconventional looks. I refer to them as cravings instead of inspiration because the word has become cliché. It is forgotten that style inspiration does not entail a literal imitation of another person. Inspiration is the indirect influence of another’s articles and attitudes into our own wardrobe, essentially a collection of many influences.
I took a trip to Washington Square Park to see who my fellow New Yorkers were craving in their closets and to possibly tantalize your, the reader’s, taste buds.
I met Schmidt, visiting from Germany, who was looking so effortlessly masculine, cool in his moto jacket, harem sweatpants, lace-up boots and coordinating snapback and backpack. Take note of the leather cuff, Ray-Bans and scruff that really are the cherry on top of his bad-boy look. He said no one influences his style besides himself…. Rock on Schmidt.

I ran into two friends Sam and Aliya, both students, passing through on a study break. Sam’s jacket caught my eye with the juxtaposition of the matador-esque appliqué on a sporty anorak. Her inspiration comes from herself “as an eight-year-old getting into my closet every morning and playing dress-up.â€
